Music Friday: Great video and Stageit

I don’t have a playlist but I wanted to share some fun music items I’ve come across this week.

First of all, check out this video for Josh Ritter’s new single:

Amazing. This blog post on Etsy explains a bit about how it was done. 12,000 cutouts. I can’t even imagine the patience those artists have.

Second, have you ever heard of Stageit? I hadn’t until last weekend when Vienna Teng did a show from her living room. Really. It’s pretty neat – the performer does a concert from wherever they want, and you can watch it on your computer wherever you want. Vienna’s show was at 10pm, so Tom and I went out to dinner, got into our PJs, and watched the show in bed! The next night, Ben Sollee gave a show too that was also great.

I can’t explain how cool it is to watch them give a show in their living room or office. It kind of feels like you are video chatting with the artist (though it’s a one-on-many chat). There is a chat box next to the video screen so you can request songs, ask questions, or chat with the other viewers. For both of the shows I watched this weekend, it was the performer’s first show with Stageit, so it was fun to see them experience it for the first time. They both seemed excited and a little overwhelmed watching the song requests coming in.

Definitely check it out to see if anyone you like is giving a show on Stageit. And if you’re into cello/folk/bluegrass, Ben Sollee is giving another show on Tuesday.

San Diego, I love you

Recently, I spent a week in San Diego for work. The first half was spent at a conference in a hotel that was a bit secluded, but the second half we stayed in the Gaslamp district, which was amazing. I had several morning runs along the water, lots of good food, and enjoyed as much time outside as work allowed me.

A few iphone / instagram pictures from the week. Really, why don’t I move there? Why put up with winter when I don’t have to?

The Sunday Times

Tom and I get the Sunday Times each week. It’s a favorite ritual to sit down in the living room with some coffee and read the paper. Tom likes the main page and Sunday Review sections, and I favor the Business, Style, and Sunday Review sections. I also like to skim over the Book Review. We each try to beat the other to starting the crossword.

Some weeks I skim the paper in under 30 minutes, with not a lot catching my eye. This week I was taken in for several hours. There were quite a few interesting articles, I thought I’d share:

Even Critics of Safety Net Increasingly Depend on It -   Also check out the maps and charts.

It’s the Economy, Honey - Interesting piece on a couple that are both economists at Wharton. Also read A Couple’s Basic Principles of Lovenomics 101.

The M.R.S. and the Ph.D. – Yeah women Ph.D.s! Glad to see the “What Men Want” list shifting.

Did you read anything interesting this weekend? I’d love to hear.

Have a good week!

Running with the pup

Taking our pup out on weeknight runs has been good motivation for me to get a run in on cold nights. I started in early January by taking her out for 3 mile run/walk intervals. We started with 1 minute run / 2 minute walk intervals, and worked our way up to running the whole way with only two or three breaks. The intervals were great for getting me back into running shape too.

Ready for my run!

She is just so darn cute. Before I change to run, I say to her, “Do you want to go for a run?!” and her ears perk up. I don’t think she knows the word “run” yet, but she gets excited whenever we start a sentence with, “Do you want to…” When I’m pick up her harness, she comes over, sits down, and lifts a paw up so I can put the harness around her leg.

The girl is fast. Her speed came suddenly, too. In early December, she couldn’t keep up with bigger dogs in the park. After we got back from Christmas, she was at least as fast as they were. When we run together, we keep it at my easy pace, which looks like a casual stroll on her. No wonder Vizslas are known for endurance; at my speed she barely get a workout.

We were hesitant to take her running at first since she is only 7 months old, but after seeing how easy the pace looks on her, I’m not worried. Plus, it’s only a half an hour and I’ve seen her run much harder for longer when playing with other dogs. I think it’s taught her better leash manners too. Before we started running together, she was apt to pull a bit when we walked together. Speeding up would help because we were keeping up with her natural pace. When we run, it seems to be closer to that natural pace and she stays right at my side, keeping the leash loose. I send her a lot of compliments when she’s positioned there, and since then she’s maintained a good heel even when walking.

I can’t wait to take her out for longer runs when she’s big enough in the summer.

Music Friday: something new to me

So I fell off the face of the earth for another two weeks. Work has been busy, home has been home, working out has been eh….

I wanted to do a Music Friday based on a new running mix, but I didn’t share it because I listen to a lot of dance music and Daft Punk when I run, and I’m not exactly the hippest kid on the block so it’s probably not going to be new to you.

But, this week I’ve totally fallen in love a new (to me) artist, Alexander Ebert. Like I said, I’m not the hippest kid on the block, so I’m sorry if you are so over him.

A Million Years from Alexander on Vimeo.

But it’s kind of funny. I just heard about Alexander Ebert a couple weeks ago. When I was in New Mexico, Tom and I were driving around listening to his mom’s satellite radio. A song came on that I thought was super cute, and I downloaded it onto my phone on the spot. The song was Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and I just found out yesterday that Alexander Ebert is the lead singer for that band.

So there you go, there’s some music on a Friday! Have a good weekend!

16 hours of TV

Have you been watching the show Downton Abbey?

I had heard great things about the show before the new season premiered last week, so on Monday night I turned on Season 1 on  Netflix. Tom saw that it was a British drama, and wasn’t into it. By the end of the episode, he was asking to watch the next…and so went the next two nights, with Tom always asking if we wanted to watch one more episode. We finished all of Season 1 by Wednesday, and we decided to finish all of Season 2 by Sunday night so that we could be caught up by the time the show airs on Sunday night. Season 2 wasn’t on Netflix, but Tom found it on another site. Every night this weekend we settled in to at least two episodes (we’re cool).

Come Sunday night, after we had finished all of Season 2, including the two hour episode that aired on Christmas, we figured out that (duh) Season 2 just started in the US!

Sixteen hours of Downton Abbey in one week, and I’m now hearing a British cadence in my head. Oy.

Have you watched it? If you like a good drama, it’s great! I love the outfits, especially Mary’s. I can’t wait until Season 3, and I can’t believe I have to wait a year!

Music Friday

Earlier this week “King of Pain” by The Police came on the radio while driving home from work. I have a strange memory associated with that song; I always remember being a little girl, going to some clothes store after playing at my mom’s mom’s group. It was a store with big circular racks, the kind that you can hide under and think you’re invisible behind the clothes. It triggers a few other memories, like going to the mall after the mom’s group and having sicilian-style pizza for the first time (which, now that I’m thinking about it, isn’t sicilian pizza thin crust, not the thick crust that I’m associating with “sicilian pizza?”). These small memories come to me whenever I hear “King of Pain.”

Later in the week I heard a Beach Boys song, and that triggered some memories too. We used to listen to a lot of oldies in the car when I was little. The Beach Boys make me think of really wanting a Beach Boys tape for my birthday, and being upset when the one I received didn’t have “Kokomo” on it. I think the Beach Boys had a revival once they were on Full House :) .

I started thinking about all of the songs that I have memories associated with, usually sitting in the back seat of my parents’ Jeep listening to whatever tape my mom had just bought.

Enjoy!

Do you have any songs that set off memories?

Spending time in a meaningful way

Do you ever come to the realization that you aren’t spending your time in the most meaningful way? That TV or mundane tasks take over and before you know it you haven’t done anything interesting?

I went into last weekend with two goals: run and finish the book I’m reading. I accomplished neither of these. Instead, I spent my time watching TV, cleaning, running errands, and cooking, so on Monday evening I was determined to take Molly on a run/walk during the last 30 minutes of daylight. One block later, we arrived at the park and saw her favorite puppy friends running around. There was no way I was going to get her past the park once she saw Buster, so I gave up my run to let her play. Then I wasted the rest of the evening watching TV instead of reading.

Tuesday morning, the panic came. I’m apt to let activities that I don’t really care about take over my time, and then before I know it my window has passed. If I had made running a priority over the weekend, I wouldn’t have broken down over missing Monday’s run.

The panic was an overreaction, and I know there are bigger things to worry about than running and reading, but the panic gave me determination to do the things I want to do when I have the time to do them. Tuesday evening, I left work at exactly 5, got home and dressed by 5:15, and I captured 30 minutes of twilight running around my hilly neighborhood. Before bed, I gave myself time to read for an hour.

I didn’t make any New Years resolutions, but if I had to pick something, I resolve to make better use of my time.

To Resolve Project

I saw this project of resolutions designed as phone and computer backgrounds posted on SwissMiss, and I thought it was just great. I think it would be fun to frame some of these prints. For now, I downloaded a few and set them as my screen saver.

Music Friday

I would like to start posting music on Fridays. I love discovering music, so if you like this or have any suggestions, please let me know!

Work has been crazy coming off of the Holidays. I’ll be doing a lot of traveling this Spring, and there is a lot of preparation to be done right now. That’s on top of the normal work load of equal importance, so I’m going a little crazy. Eyes glazing over, squinting at my computer screen deciding if a graphic looks better one-pixel-to-the-right crazy.

So to counteract the crazy I’ve been listening to a lot of calm music. Melody Gardot, Bon Iver, Iron and Wine…here’s a sampling of today’s mix:

I discovered Melody Gardot a few months ago and I’ve fallen in love with her sound. I was listening to her heavily during the holidays, in a jazzy mix that included Diana Krall’s holiday album.

What have you been listening to? Have a great Friday!
